FAQ’s
Q. If I don’t live in a remote area, can I enrol with the school?
A. Yes you can.
Q. If I am a home-based learner by choice, am I required to pay a fee to enrol my child?
A. Yes. The annual fee is currently $1078.50 per student. It must be forwarded with the enrolment application.
Q. My occupation requires that I travel for my work. Can I enrol my child with the school?
A. Yes. If a person has to be itinerant to undertake their occupation (and therefore their child is mobile within Queensland for the majority of the school year), then that student can be enrolled.
Q. My child has a medical condition and cannot attend a mainstream school. Is my child eligible to be enrolled with the school?
A. Yes. If your child has a physical health problem or is experiencing a social or emotional condition of such severity that they are unable to attend any local school on a full-time basis they can be enrolled with our school. The anticipated length of enrolment needs to be at least 16 school weeks. Documentation to support their case must include relevant information provided by a registered medical practitioner, or a registered psychologist.
Q. We are travelling around the country over the course of a significant period of time. Can I enrol my child with the school?
A. Yes, you can, as a home-based learner by choice paying the fee of $1078.50 per annum.
Q. We are travelling overseas. Can I enrol my child with the school?
A. Yes, you can.
Q. Do I need to be available to supervise my child’s studies if they are enrolled with Cairns SDE?
A. Yes. A responsible, capable and willing adult needs to supervise and support your child’s studies each school day for the length of time the day’s work takes to complete.
Q. Do I need a home computer and to be connected to the Internet?
A. Yes. Your child will need a PC with a high speed connection to the internet. This requirement can be waived in certain circumstances, depending upon a particular family’s travelling circumstances.
Q. If my child studies through Distance Education can they still obtain an OP, a QCE or a School Based Apprenticeship?
A. Yes. Students completing Years 11 and 12 through Distance Education have the choice of a range of flexible pathways to achieve their goals, whether that goal is an OP, a QCE, a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship, or another qualification through TAFE or other RTOs.
