White Ribbon

L-R: Derek Biancotti, Jeremy Flynn, Roslyn Scott, Ken Callaghan, Andrew Oliver.

Cairns SDE is officially a Certified White Ribbon School

On Monday, 5th February 2018, Roslyn Scott, Ken Callaghan and Derek Biancotti completed the White Ribbon Workshop at Gordonvale SHS with other like-minded schools and organisations.

White ribbon was established by a group of Toronto (Canada) men who after their nation experienced the horrific massacre of 14 women at the University of Montreal (1989), came together to speak out and work to stop men's violence against women.  It was 1991 when "they initiated the male-led movement known as White Ribbon, an annual awareness-raising event (WR Day) held between 25th Nov and 6th Dec."  WR is now an international effort in over 57 countries with men and boys working together to end men's violence against women.

How we achieved this in 2018

To achieve the status of White Ribbon School, Cairns SDE established a team of teachers and our principal.  We have attended workshops and conducted meetings, but most importantly, we have raised awareness in our school community during 2017, "making women's safety a man's issue too" and the need to "Stand Up and Speak Out and act to prevent men's violence towards women".
