Chaplain

Deb Bromley, School Chaplain

My name is Deb Bromley and I am the School Chaplain at Cairns School of Distance Education.  In 2019, I will be based at the school on Mondays and Wednesdays.

I commenced work at Cairns SDE at the beginning of Term 2, 2018.  As School
Chaplain, I am employed by Scripture Union Qld., the largest employing body for school chaplains under the National School Chaplaincy Program.

As a Chaplain in a state school, my remit is to work in the area of social, emotional and spiritual support with students, parents, carers and staff.  My role covers all manner of pastoral care needs and I hope to offer time and a friendly, listening ear to anyone within our school community.

I commenced work as a Chaplain with SU Qld in Brisbane in 2006 and worked there for four years.  Since 2013, I have been the Chaplain at Kuranda District State College and in 2016, I commenced working as the Area Program Coordinator for SU Qld's A2B Program.

I love the role of 'Chappy' and am excited at bringing my experience and ideas to Cairns SDE, to support students, staff and families.

During 2019, I am collaborating with Kids Helpline and the rest of our Support Team at Cairns SDE, to deliver a series of Wellbeing modules online which will be accessible to both primary and secondary students. These modules will be delivered in a 'chatroom style' format via Collaborate, whereby students can interact, ask questions and dialogue with members of the Cairns SDE Support Team.

I will also be delivering 'Love Bites', a healthy relationship workshop, with Sally O'Brien, our School Based Youth Health Nurse, delivering some A2B Lifeskill groups with Open Learning Campus students and of course connecting with as many students as possible during our school camps, mini-schools and Celebration Week.

I am passionate about working with teenagers and for the past 6 years have directed SU Qld's 'Girls Camp FNQ', for high school-aged girls, which runs in the September holiday.

I would love to connect with and support our students and families in whatever way I can and invite parents, carers and Home Tutors to email me to arrange a 'Virtual Cuppa' appointment where I can give you a call to chat about any aspects of life, faith, concerns about studies, how to make sense of the craziness of our world or any topic at all you would like to chat or offload about.
