NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year. It is the only national assessment all Australian students have the opportunity to undertake.  NAPLAN is now in Term 1 each year in March and this will be written on your child's work rate calendar.

NAPLAN consists of four tests: a reading test, writing test, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) test and a numeracy test.  All of the NAPLAN tests are online except the Year 3 writing test which is still on paper.  The test questions are presented in Standard Australian English dialect.  Students read some of the questions and listen to others with headphones. The tests will get easier or harder, depending on how students are going in the test.

Although Cairns SDE is an online school, not all students are eligible to sit NAPLAN offsite (at home) due to national protocols and Queensland Curriculum Assessment Authority (QCAA) regulations.  Below is information about each enrolment category and their NAPLAN criteria:

  • Geographically isolated – eligible to sit NAPLAN offsite (at home) after approval from (QCAA).  CSDE will apply to QCAA on your behalf.

  • Medical - eligible to sit NAPLAN offsite (at home) after approval from (QCAA).  CSDE will apply to QCAA on your behalf.

  • All other enrolment categories (home based by choice, itinerant, travelling) will be required to sit NAPLAN either onsite at CSDE or at another school (host school).

  • Withdrawal – parents/carers may opt for their child not to participate in NAPLAN due to religious, philosophical or other reasons.

Any questions in relation to NAPLAN should be directed to:  Naplan@cairnssde.eq.edu.au
